How do we write the year 2015 in Chinese?
Short answer: you can just write 2015 in the Hindu–Arabic numeral way, we can understand it perfectly. 😀
How do we write seventeen thousand (17000) in Chinese?
OK! As a rule of thumb, English speakers divide large numbers by 10^3 while people who use Chinese divide large numbers by 10^4 .
And that’s the key point when you translate large numbers from English to Chinese.
*We set “large numbers” to numbers larger than 9999 ( less than astronomical numbers) here.
Take a look of this example:
17000= 1*(10^4)+7*1000
while
1 = 「一」
7 = 「七」
1000 = 「千」
thus
17000 = 「一萬七千」(simplified:「一万七千」)
*possible pit hole: 10^12 「兆」
China use 「万亿」to express 10^12 instead.
10^12 = (10^4) * (10^8)
